A Guide to Buying Apartment Property For Sale in France - 26 September, 2011

Some people think that the only way to buy property for sale in France and live the French lifestyle is to purchase a rambling old chateau or farmhouse and embark on a historic renovation project deep in the French countryside. This type of property for sale in France has its attractions, but it is not the only option for those who want to own a holiday home here. If the idea of restoring old stone walls, re-tiling floors, and being up to your elbows in mud to renovate a property in the middle of nowhere doesn’t appeal, you could always buy an apartment in France instead.

Advantages of An Apartment

There are many advantages to buying an apartment property for sale in France rather than a villa or a house. You will be responsible for a very minimal amount of maintenance work, and you will not have to worry about gardening or cleaning the pool. Most apartments are newly built, which means better facilities and more modern features.

Another advantage of owning apartment property for sale in France is that most apartments are likely to be nearby to a city or at least a town. This means that you have easy access to any amenities and shopping, and will be able to enjoy the culture and nightlife of the city whenever you desire.

Apartments are also often much cheaper than buying houses. You will of course, have less square footage, but how much do you really need for a holiday home? An apartment is also very easy to lock up and leave alone for several months, which means that you don’t have to worry about your pipes freezing or your garden overgrowing when you leave your holiday home for the season.

Types of French Apartments

The French use a unique system of classifications when referring to the different types of apartment property for sale in France. If you are unfamiliar with this system it can be confusing to try to understand the French property listings. Here is a guide to help you out:

·        T1 Apartments: These are usually a “studio apartment” with a bathroom and one other room. The main space will include both the kitchen and the living room and there will usually be a sofa bed that folds out for sleeping. This is a very compact space, but perfect for one or two people.

·        T1 Bis Apartments: This type of apartment is just like the T1 apartment, but it also includes a separate corner for the bed which can be screened off.

·        T2 Apartment: These are one bedroom apartments with a bathroom and a separate living room and kitchen area.

·        T3 Apartment: This is just like the T2 Apartment yet has one more bedroom.

These distinctions carry on in this manner depending on how many more bedrooms the apartment has.

Of course owning an apartment has its downsides, such as having to share the communal swimming pool and living in close proximity to other tenants. However, if you are looking for a property for sale in France that can provide you with convenience, value, and a spot close to the action of the city, an apartment might be just right for you.
