Helping Your Kids Adjust When Moving to France - 16 March, 2011
Now that your family is moving to your new real estate in France, have you thought about how your children will handle the situation? Moving can be a traumatic experience for children, because it takes them away from familiarity and might separate them from friends. Some children end up feeling lonely and isolated, and have trouble integrating into a new environment, especially in a foreign country.

However, the plus side is that children are naturally very adaptive and if they are prepared properly and given support throughout the move, they will have a good chance of handling it well.

So how can you help your child adjust to the idea of moving to your France property?

Prepare them well in advance

If you let the child know as early as possible that the family is going to move to a France property, they will have more time to digest the idea and come to terms with it. You can tell them all about France, show them pictures, watch films, and read stories about it. If they are older you can encourage them to read about the region that you are moving to in books from the library or on websites online. They will discover all of the interesting aspects of your new future home, which will likely make them eager to go there and experience it for themselves.

Involve them in the process

Depending on your child's age, try to involve them as much as possible in the process of choosing a property for sale in France. Bring them with you to look at homes, and discuss the pros and cons of each property for sale in France together. Involving your child in the home selection process will help them feel like they have some control over the situation, and also let them feel more invested in the idea of the move.

Bring Along Some Familiar Comforts

Now that you have chosen some real estate in France you are ready to make the move. To ease the transition for your child, make sure to bring along as many little comforts of home as you can. It might be a favourite blanket or toy, a Friday Movie and Pizza Night tradition, or you cooking them their favourite recipe. All of these comforting and familiar routines will help your child begin to think of their new house in France as home.

Get Out There and Make New Friends

The best thing your child can do once they have settled in your new home is to get out there in the community and start forming new friendships. Encourage them to choose a sport or an activity such as dance, art, or drama, and sign them up for a course. Meet up with other parents and children in your neighbourhood for play dates. Enrol them in a French school. Once your child makes connections with other children and begins to form friendships, they will be much happier.

Above all, listen to your child's needs and show them love and support during the difficult transition of moving to a new country.
